The Importance of the Book of Genesis. A surveyor must always begin from a point of reference. So, too, history must start at some definite place of beginnings. The Bible is, through and through, a historical revelation. It is the account of God’s activity in history. As such, it must have a beginning.  How one approaches the book of Genesis largely determines what they will get from its study. I would like to mention three methods of interpretation which we must avoid. Neo-orthodox theologians are willing to grant that the Bible contains truth, but will not go so far as to accept it as the truth. They suspect that throughout its transmission down through the ages it has become something less than inspired and inerrant. “The doctrine of the inspiration of Scripture does not stand in the relationship of a priori but a posteriori in our theology. The doctrine of verbal inspiration is not the basis of our systematic theology and is not the major premise of Christian assurance.” An official of the Missouri Synod delegation of theologians in   Another might have the Book of Enoch and the Gospel of John. So everyone and every church had different writings that they preached on. There are not many accounts of early church fathers addressing inerrancy, which seems to suggest, that biblical inerrancy was just not a serious issue in ancient Greco-Roman History. The peculiar character of primitive history accounts for the numerous genealogical lists found in the books of the Old Testament. We shall enumerate only the principal ones: Genesis , give the Patriarchs from Adam to Noah; Genesis , the ethnography of the sons of Noah; Genesis , the Patriarchs from Sem to Abraham; Genesis , the posterity of Thare; Genesis , the posterity of Nachor; Genesis , the descendants of Abraham.  The inspired historian makes no effort to harmonize these striking differences, but seems to be only careful to reproduce his sources.  Again, throughout Genesis 10, the genealogy serves as ethnographic purpose, so that its names represent nations or countries. [He] emphasizes the actualization of Israel’s ancient traditions again and again in her life of faith ” (Pg. ). He says of William F. Albright [e.g., From the Stone Age to Christianity], “Albright occupied a middle ground between radical revisionists and biblical fundamentalists.  To claim the historical veracity of the Bible because ‘the Bible says so’ lacks the intellectual respectability Albright demanded The verifiable data Albright sought in the sands of the ancient Near Eastern desert did not live up to his optimism.” (Pg.  Childs assumes the biblical books of the Old Testament are the products of a very long and complex compositional history.” (Pg. ). He concludes, “The text as human production and as divinely inspired are both affirmed on this account. At the same time. Because of the difficulty of sorting out the truth, many Christians relegate the creation/evolution debate to the status of a secondary issue that does not relate to how one becomes right with God through the gospel of Jesus Christ. For the most part, this line of thinking is correct.  Its opponents see this view as a slippery slope to rejecting the veracity of God’s Word. Because many Christians view the creation/evolution debate as of secondary importance, there is usually little or no concern over the theological implications of how one interprets the Bible’s view of creation.  Yet critics of the Bible want to treat these opening chapters of Genesis as ancient Hebrew myth rather than primeval history.
